Circus Suite for Trombone Quartet
An original quartet for Alto Trombone (or tenor alternative) 2 Tenor Trombones and Bass Trombone.
A piece in 5 movements by Tim Power.
Entry Parade A homage to Fucik's Entry of the Gladiators with a short fanfare. Main theme followed by a tricky bass solo.
Clowns A movement in 6/8 with the odd 5/8 bar thrown in. Trying to depict the unpredictability of the typical circus clowns with discordant "car horns" in Tenor Trombone 1 and 2.
Trapeze A slow movement in 3/4 that tests the soft playing of the group. Some sumptuous low pedals in the bass trombone part toward the end of this movement.
Jugglers & Acrobats An exciting, funky movement in a mixture of 8/8 and 4/4. Slips the odd 5/8 and 7/8 bars in with some interesting harmonies as well.
Exit Parade A straight recap of the opening movement offering some symmetry to the piece and also this idea of the circus performers leaving the big top as loudly and raucously as they entered.
Technical piece using irregular time signatures. Lots to do for all four players. However, bass trombone part really comes to the fore.
